Tiny Toons!

With Marvel set to release so many movies for the big screen, it is no surprise they have decided to release some more animated goodness to themarvelshs small screen.  Currently Marvel has Iron Man and Wolverine and the X-men airing on the Nicktoons network, but soon their will be even more Marvel animation coming to a TV near you.  Marvel will showcase two new shows Marvel Super Hero Squad and The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes

Marvel Super Hero Squad is a popular brand of toys which depict marvel super heroes at their cutest.  The toy line has become so popular there will be an animated series, which will premiere late 2009 on Cartoon Network.  The series will consist of 26 half-hour episodes, featuring such heroes as Captain America, Silver Surfer, The Hulk, Wolverine, Iron Man, and The Falcon.  The premise is The Super Hero Squad must prevent Dr. Doom and his evil allies from collecting pieces of the Infinity Sword.  If Dr. Doom is successful he will rule the universe.

marvelthorTo go along with the Marvel Super Hero Squad series a Video game will be released as well.  This game will feature more than 20 Marvel characters such as Captain America, Dr. Doom, Falcon, Hulk, Iron Man, Juggernaut, Ms. Marvel, Silver Surfer, Thing, Thor and Wolverine.  This is a single and multiplayer game with two modes battle mode or adventure mode.  This game will be available for the Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, DS, and PSP

Then in 2011 Nicktoons will air The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes tomarvelavengers go along with along with all of the Marvel movies. This animated series consists 26 half-hour episodes starring Iron Man, The Hulk, Captain America, Wasp, Ant-man, and Thor.  This could turn out to be an amazing series, I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us.

With the success of Wolverine and the X-men Marvel has ordered a second season, which it has been revealed that Apocalypse will be the main villain of the season.  If Marvel keeps doing well with their series who knows what comic characters we might get to see animated.  I am hoping for a Young Avengers series, it would be great to see how they handle Hulkling and Wiccan’s relationship.

For more animated goodness check out Batman: The Brave and the Bold on Cartoon Network, Wolverine and the X-men and Spectacular Spider-Man on Nicktoons.

Superboy: What-A Mighty Good Man!

Starting in August 2009, Superboy a.k.a. Conner Kent a.k.a. our dream guy, will make his return in Adventure Comics #1 featuring The Legion of Superheroes.

AdventureComicsVol2-001

In Geoff John’s 2008 limited series Legion of Three Worlds, it was revealed that Superboy had been resurrected by the Legion of Superheroes.  He was placed in a Kryptonian rejuvenation chamber, however it took 1000 years for his body to fully heal, causing him to awake in the Legion’s time. wizarduniverse_2058_1986234596

Conner will be attending Smallville High and will have to face villains such as Lex Luthor and Braniac.  We will also see some of his former friends and love interests such as Wondergirl and Red Robin.

Now that Superboy has his own comic maybe DC will dive deep [whhink] into Conner’s DNA origins involving both Superman and Luthor!  It would also be nice to see him back on the Teen Titans roster

MAD’s Triple H: Ryan Reynolds

MAD HHH EmmaFrost

Originally one of the guys in a team of Two Guys a Girl &  a Pizza Place, Ryan Reynolds has over the years has given us the funny when we needed it most.  With Blade Trinity, X-Men Origins and Deadpool [coming out in 2011] under his super hero utility belt, it’s only a matter of time (also rumored for 2011) before we will hopefully see Mr. Reyonlds in the role he was born to play, The Flash, instead of LAME Adam Brody, along side the Justice League of course!

Another Dose of Classic Marvel Animation

In April Disney released the first two volumes of the 90′s classic X-Men the Animated Series. Luckily for us mutant-heads Disney will release volumes 3 & 4 in September just in time for early holiday shopping. Screw a hippopotamus, I want the X-Men for X-Mas!

x-men vol4
Each volume contains two dvds which, like the previous volumes, will have 8 episodes per disk.  Given the amount of episodes, we will more than likely see another volume in the near future to satisfy our feral cravings!

Artist, David Nakayama created some sweet contemporary cover art for the DVD’s, which, like his contemporary style, are pretty cool and creative. You can view these covers and his other art on his website davidnakayama.com

So sit tight fellow mutie lovers for it will be only a couple of more months ’till we hear Rogue mutter something about being as nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full a’ rockin’ chairs, and Wolverine aching to penetrate the deepest regions of some uber villains recesses! OUCH….or AHHH.

Buying in Hulk

The Hulk is one of Marvel’s most enduring & popular characters to have survived to this day. Having read the first volume in the Hulk Marvel Classics collection I can see why.

The Hulk

You have to love reading comics from that era, it’s a sociological wet dream and I know a thing or two about wet dreams. So anyways, you know the drill. Bruce Banner is a top U.S. physicist. A tragic accident transforms his being to where he (with varying methods and effects) becomes the green-skinned giant himself, the Hulk! Hulk’s strength is almost unlimited and tied directly to his rage. The more angry he becomes the stronger he gets. He gets into some wacky hijinks, kills some communists & generally manages to be a perfect paragon of American anti-heroes.

In the early 60′s (Hulk’s first appearance was in 1962), the world was one mixed up, crazy place. America hated Russia, people were dealing with the aftershocks of war & the culture was becoming obsessed with science and the future. The young were imaginative, eager & ready to rebel which is something that never really changes.

The pop culture from the time reflects this perfectly and boy-howdy do we see it in comics! The angst of Dr. Banner’s hidden secret, the sexist/sexualizing treatment of Betty Ross, the racist demonization of the Russians and Communist countries. At the center of all the cultural trappings lies the character that truly drives the story and has kept us coming back for more for all this time.

The Hulk and Bruce Banner are mirrors of one another. The one has limitless strength while the other has limitless intellect and their self-destructive symbiosis provides endless soap opera drama & potential for character growth which is really all a comic is. He is so easily related to by young people due to the pain and frustration he feels for being hounded and forced into places and people he didn’t want to be. We all can see a bit of ourselves in his struggle for balance and inner peace. Yin & yang, good & evil, humans have always found a dichotomous binary in their core being.

You want to sell a book? Slap some relevant culture, deep-seated emotional anguish & some bitchin’ superpowers and you might just have yourself a money-maker. A money-maker that actually means something to boot!

And that’s the Hulk. Hounded, powerful but ultimately good. Also, Stan Lee’s writing is worth the read alone. It is like corn, stuffed in a corn dog, smothered in corn syrup. This is some corny stuff.

It is completely worth the read and I recommend going back to these Marvel and DC collections to really understand the beginnings of these characters and the culture that they sprang from.
