“ I’ve got a couple of cool things planned for these sets and I’ve already begun work on them, however they all remain blank. Sometimes the prep work seems to take more time than the actual creation of the card itself. I do have plans on puzzles for this go around. So keep your eyes peeled for these trading card sets to be released later in 2012.”

My pick of the week was Shade 2 by a landslide! I have to admit that James Robinson isn’t my favorite writer in the world. I loved that he wrote a Green Lantern/Green Arrow series (Cry for Justice) but I didn’t like the execution. I loved that he created a Justice League that had interesting and diverse characters but again, I was lost on the final product. His love of comics history and continuity always shines through in his work and that’s a trait I look for in writers.

So, to a person who has not yet read Starman but did pick up this mini-series, I assure you he is making something wonderful with The Shade! It’s pure character-driven violence and explosion the whole time and I laughed out loud at least twice this issue. There are interesting uses of Shade’s powers, some touching moments with his girlfriend and even a non-tired use of the English/French animosity cliché! All in all, this is written by a guy on a mission and he’s even swung it to be friendly to new readers! This is not to be missed!

All of the comics this week totally pressed my happiness buttons but the one with the ending that shocked me the most (and had the requisite number of burly, hairy naked guys to earn my approval) was Xenoholics 2! The series so far has been a fantastic, strange little tale of a group of possibly-misguided alien abductees, finding each other and sharing their stories. Bob is our protagonist who has recently lost everything when he won’t relent his story of being taken by extraterrestrials. Their world is turned upside down when what appears to be an actual crop (err concrete) circle appears in the city and their group therapist vanishes. To conflate things even more, a mysterious and violent organization shows up and starts demanding answers from the Xenoholics. It’s been a blast to read with such an interesting art style by Seth Damoose; a title to check out if you’ve ever enjoyed the X-Files!

As an LGBT blog the gang at Mutant A Day looks for super heroes everywhere we go, and we are proud and pleased to know that we have found a hero and ally in Ben Cohen!

 Schism 3 and Generation Hope 10 are tied winners for me this week because Schism as an event really kicked into high gear and this issue of GH was an integral part of that! I can’t say much about either without spoilers and it’s a bit early in the publication schedule to do that to you but suffice it to say that this is a fresh look at the mutants of Utopia and how they fit into the world. Idie plays a humongous role in the action and it’s a disturbing and twisted ride that I completely loved. I’ve been a-okay with the event so far but this week has me truly excited for the rest of the fallout!

 I ask you, my fellow humans, how this comic could have possibly not been my pick of the week? We have Scott Snyder writing as compellingly as he always does, Sean Murphy totally blowing all my minds and my menz with his pencil work (this is my first experience with his and he’s already on my artists-to-watch list) and this variant from Cliff Chiang that always makes me grin. Felicia Book is all grown up and is a full-fledged, ass-kicking agent in the Vassals of the Morningstars. She has this Renee Montoya/Buffy Summers vibe that OF COURSE makes me happy. It’s everything that’s great about American Vampire with a touch of the Buffyverse and sprinkled with Hellboy. So, you know, another sure hit from Scott Snyder! A must-buy for any fans of the AV series.

The more I thought about this week’s great reads (Pixies, Avengers Academy 14, Uncanny X-Force 10, X-Factor 219, Giant-Sized X-Men and Generation Hope)the more I kept coming back to this adorable, endearing title as the one that stood out most in my mind. It’s very clear that this little tale preludes to an animated feature (debuting in 2012) but the vibe of the art hit all my sweet spots and then some. Bright, expressive art by Liesl Adams drove the very cute story into overdrive and I hope and pray the OGN/adnimated feature (the information in the comic is a little vague) feature her work exclusively! Seriously, I don’t remember the last time 25 cents bought me something I loved so much, get this immediately if you’ve ever enjoyed a moment of a Pixar film!

One of Aaron M. and my [Rueben] favorite characters that’s new to the Marvel universe is Daken, son of Wolverine, claws and all. One of the more interesting features of this mutant is his ability to control his pheromones in order to gain the upper hand on his opponent.  This morning I was thinking,

“Can pheromones be stronger than someone’s sexual orientation?”

Frankly It’s something I’m going to look into, and maybe do some photos in regards to it. Other than that it’s something to think about. Do you give out pheromones that attract people who would otherwise not be attracted to your gender? Boggles the mind. And the nether regions…apparently.

Stop everything you’re doing and go here to watch the longer WonderCon footage/trailer for this summer’s Green Lantern movie!

All traces of doubt have been removed from my mind about this, I will gladly be there at midnight, tickets pre-ordered in advance.

He was gay and inspirational and 39. The exact cause of death has not been determined.  His overdose makes me ackowledge that those who are heroes to others may themselves not have heroes at all.

He took character Thom Creed from Hero and made me, even at the ripe age of 27, remember what it was like to be in the closet and yearn for that hero in myself to come out. Even heroes need heroes, comic or not, to look up to, to emulate.

It’s official, Adrianne Palicki has been cast as Diana Prince in David E. Kelley’s new Wonder Woman show! I’ve never seen Friday Night Lights but she could sure pull off the looks of an Amazon. Maybe not my first choice but fingers crossed she has a powerful take on the character.

Avengers Academy 9 claims to finally address the big question mark hanging over Finesse: just what role does Taskmaster play in her life? The series took a crazy twist right away but it’s consistently a must-buy for me.

Generation Hope 4 promises a face-off between Teon and Wolverine as the Five Lights adjust to life on Utopia after the Tokyo catastrophe. I can’t wait to find out how closely they depend on Hope and just what her existence means now that she’s collected her flock.

That White Lantern goo can only protect the Weaponer from so much…

JLA 54 begins the Rise of Eclipso and I couldn’t be more excited for this story or this team! Diversity and some crazy-powerful classic baddies to test the team, I’m all about it. Bruce Gordon returns with the evil entity in tow and starts controlling the JLA. Jade and Obsidian (woohoo, he’s back in a comic!) are slated to be the only real defense the team has, let’s hope they don’t go bonkers again.

Wonder Woman 607 brings us more of the good-and-getting-better retooling of the JMS retooling! Phil Hester is doing great stuff with the pre-plotted framework and even manages a Jason and the Argonauts homage this issue! It’s fighting, old foes and battle sisters as Diana attempts to get to the bottom of her stained glass reality. If you’re even kind of interested in Wonder Woman, get on board before too many issues pass you by!

Then in 1992, two months after I turned nine, X-Men debuted on Fox Kids. I was in love. They fought to exist, not just to save others for the sake of with great power comes great responsibility. I started collecting comics and cards and soon found my comic equivalent to Vanity Fair, Wizard Magazine.

I remember my favorite spreads were in regards to which stars would play which heroes should they ever make a movie about a particular comic. Remember when they said Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise should play Jean & Cyclops? Ick. But at the time, I whole heartedly pictured his 5’7″ frame in a skin tight blue suit.  Those were the days. [when I thought Tom Cruise was handsome] They were really spot on with Patrick Stewart playing Professor X.

With so many memories it is hard to see the magazine go. Wizard World will continue online and will launch in February, but like those who reject the Kindle in favor of the feeling of paper and print, things will never be the same.

Fellow gaming and comic book nerd extroidinaire Heber Hernandez gives us a short review and some insight on the new DC Universe Online game for pc’s and PS3′s! [oh my!]

“I love it so far!  The graphics are amazing, as well as the powers. Though there are not as many [powers] as I would like to see, but I know they are wanting to expand more so that’s something to look forward to!

 

 

Needless to say it is alot of fun and you get to fight alongside some of your favorite heroes too! There was this really neat mission quest helping the Green Lantern Corps and you got to see some of the cool powers they would do, which they have said that they will be bringing “hard light’ as a power in the future. The level cap right now is set to 30 and I’m already a level 28. It’s only been out a week or so, so I think they will be expanding in the future, but they do have alot of PVP areas for you to do once you reach the level cap.

 One of my favorite things is that your outfit can change as you progress through the game and collect new gear, but once you ‘collect’ new gear it stays with you so even though your wearing something you can change your apperance to something you have already collected. I think that is a great little perk! ”
