Variant covers do often represent some of the worst excesses of the comics industry, but this one is pretty awesome (as someone who loves Spider-Man and grew up in the era of Maximum Carnage and its symbiote-filled wake). Is it part of a series of variants across a bunch of titles this month (like the Iron Man by design crap they do every so often)? If so, I’ve somehow been oblivious to this potentially awesome set of covers.

I don’t care for it. It’s not that I dislike the concept, in fact, I think it’s a good idea to make the logo somewhat customizable to the title it will appear on, but I think this is just ineffective design. I mean, the company’s name consists of two letters, and the first of the two is completely unrecognizable. If I didn’t know it said DC, I’d be lost, which isn’t really the sort of thing you look for in the logo you spent tens of thousands of dollars to have designed. I’m sure the digital version will be cool if the “peel” is animated. Just my two cents.

No arguments here! I really only like Cry for Justice for the Ollie/Hal shipping moments and even then they’re completely out of character. I’d even go so far as to say it borders on disrespectful, really. Shade has been so much fun! I get why it’s not on everyone’s list though.

It’s just like that episode of Seinfeld where George becomes a hand model. All the people talk about the guy who was the greatest hand model in the world, but he “Wasn’t master of his own domain,” (to use their PG phrasing) and therefore ruined his hand and career. March could be great if he’d stop thinking about boobs all day. I’m kind of amazed that he gets any work done at all, actually.

Exactly, it’s a shame he generally uses his powers for hyperbolic sexsexsex when he has such obvious talent. “I was rooting for you, we were all rooting for you!” comes to mind.

You have to give Guillem March credit. He knows what his thing is and he sticks with it. Seriously, though, these Huntress covers show that he could be a good artist if he would just rein in the cheesecake. Can you imagine how horribly wrong that “wearing a sexy nightgown while beating the crap out of guys” scene in issue one would have gone if March had been the interior artist, too?

I heart Agent Brand. Her showing up in Uncanny was probably more of a plus for me than it should have been.

I’ve never been attached to Hawk and/or Dove, so my disappointment wasn’t quite as profound. I like Sterling Gates, but once I saw Rob Liefeld’s name attached, I assumed the worst. I didn’t even buy it, I just read a friend’s copy. I can relate, though, to the whole “good characters getting bad series” thing.

I also meant to mention earlier that non-insightful comments are welcome at Captain Bloggington’s, too. If I used emoticons (I just can’t bring myself to do it. I don’t know why.), I’d have a smiley face at the end of that sentence.

Awesome! Yeah, when I saw that scene in the Regenesis one-shot with Agent Brand and Hank I flipped out a little.

Oh man, I still feel totally guilty for even giving the first Hawk & Dove a shot. I still maintain the original mini-series and subsequent series are excellent. This series is just a hollow shell of the concept of Hawk & Dove. Hopefully one day those two get another treatment that they actually deserve.

I was one of the (apparently) few people who was ordering S.W.O.R.D. through Previews every month. A series like that only lasting 5 issues is a tragedy. I’ll bet that even Hawk and Dove makes it longer than 5 issues.

I definitely did! I’m a sure reader of yours now but I mostly catch the posts through Google Reader (I’m bad at making insightful comments).

Yeah, he’s got a knack for bringing out the drama of the campy superheroics that I love in my comics. Have you read S.W.O.R.D.? It’s much more humorous than this but still manages some pretty dark twists. Highs and lows, I think that’s what makes me happiest in entertainment.

You read my review? Why, thank you. So, as I guess you know now, I definitely didn’t hate it, but really the only thing that brought me back after the volume change was Kieron Gillen. I’m apathetic at best toward pretty much all of the Cyclops-aligned characters (Dazzler being one of the few characters I actively like [I'm not sure why, if you were wondering]), but I do agree that the character moments (not just with Storm, though that was a good example) did make me feel something for this side of the schism. Gillen is a great writer, so I’m willing to give him a few months before I pass final judgment on continuing to pick it up or not. I was just curious to see what your thoughts were, given that we seem to have had similar thoughts on some other recent titles.

Pretty similarly to your take on it though I might have liked a bit more (since I don’t have an opinion about Cyclops positively or negatively, really). Those two panels with Storm still give me chills! if Kieron Gillen keeps this up, I think I’ll love this more emotionally driven Uncanny X-Men.

Ha! I really don’t think we’re on a collision with the campy train on this one. It’s all serious business but not so ~dark & brooding~ that it becomes a parody. I can’t say it enough, it perfectly achieves the tone so many modern age books miss when they go for the edgier material.

You know, I think anyone would find this completely engaging because it feels like a completely new, beautifully executed take on the character. Previous feeling is irrelevant, good or bad, if I’m thinking about it completely enough.

Basically, I was taken into the story 100%. It could have been about any criminal (with a deeply tragic past) and would have been just as top-notch. The Bat-universe trappings are just gravy ^_^

i know you said you don’t have to be a Batman fan to like this, but I am a Batman fan who almost bought this for that reason alone. The Penguin hasn’t really excited me since Batman Returns (and I was like 8 or 9 at the time), though. Is it something that would make me interested in Mr. Cobblepot, even if I have a relatively high level of apathy for the character (at least compared with some of the Bat’s rogues)?

It wasn’t so much that anyone was acting out of character or anything like that, it was just kind of a run-of-the-mill Batman story. Nothing great or horrible. Just kind of blah-feeling. As I mentioned in my review of #2 over on my blog, the second one seems to be going downhill, as far as I’m concerned. It was kind of most of the annoying things about Batman stories all rolled into one (and this is coming from a huge Batman fan). At this point I say save your money and get something good like Batgirl or something great like Batwoman, if you aren’t already.

Huntress was amazing though. I wish it was more than just a mini-series.

Right? When forced to do a fully clothed person, March does some fully awesome work! 1 through 3 all have covers worthy of hanging on the wall, to my taste.

Having read Detective Comics for the first time last month (featuring Batman, anyways) I have to say I ended up liking it for the most part. I wouldn’t have noticed if anyone was behaving out of character or if anything from past continuity was off kilter though, of course.

I’m looking forward to Huntress, too. Most people I know are completely apathetic about it. Also a plus, the only involvement Guillem March has is the cover, so it hopefully won’t be too cheesecakey.

As excited as I am for Huntress, Action Comics, and X-men: Schism, my biggest hope is that Detective Comics is better than last month.

So…i was already skeptical about this whole movie when i first heard about it and now im just slowly loosing interest…Kevin Bacon as Henshaw really? Henshaw is suppose to be bulky? Why is Moira in the x-men? i thought she was a normal human that helped mutants not an actual mutant herself…i know her and charles had a fling and maybe a child. Mystique looks the youngest out of all…and they are not even using the original xmen except for Beast…in full beast form…which that came later but whatev…and i thought the guy from Kickass was playing Scott Summers..now we are getting Havok instead? im so confused…i recently just watched X2…and i just cry as to how awsome Bryan Singer’s X3 would have been with the real Phoenix instead he went and messed up superman…le sigh
