Brightest Sexy Covers

(Cover by David Finch & Scott Williams, DC Comics)

Brightest Day 17 finally cuts the camera back to Zamoran, showing the struggle the Hawks and the Star Sapphires now face to maintain the very purity of love (which, let’s be honest, the Sapphires have not always been shining paragons of). Captain, our Captain Boomerang is on the warpath to Hawk as well! I can’t wait to see how it all wraps up.

(Cover by Freddie Williams II, DC Comics)

JSA All-Stars 14 is the first of our gorgeous January covers here and…it’s done by Freddie Williams II. I’ve been pretty critical of the guy but he really has grown even since I’ve been reading All-Stars. It feels like Sturges is finally getting to the team and pitch he’s been driving at since issue 1 and this should be another fun romp. The Puzzlemen attack and Roxy gets some humanity tutorials.

(Cover by Gene Ha, DC Comics)

Do I ship Starman/Congorilla? You bet your furry diamonds, I do. I’ve been digging the dynamic these two have had since they were re-introduced on the JLA. They’re my favorite part of the new team and I’m so happy they’re getting a one-shot! This ties in to the Omega storyline going on with the Crime Syndicate and Omega Man and has these two friends bouncing around the DCU searching for the Fountain of Youth and the answer to diffuse the dark energy encasing a huge chunk of Washington, D.C.

(Cover by Alex Garner, DC Comics)

The last time I saw Steel was in 52! I’m so happy to see this badass black superhero get a little love, even as a one-shot deal. Dr. John Irons kickstarts the Reign of Doomsday as the only superhero active in Metropolis and I have no idea why. The answer to that mystery and how he fares against the monstrosity is in these pages. Kudos to DC for beginning this event with Steel, it got me on board with the whole idea.

(Cover by Phil Noto, DC Comics)

Superboy 3 continues Conner’s Smallville living, with a mad scientist friend, lunch with Kid Flash, alien terrorists and Krypto! I’m late to the party but really enjoying the story (but sharing Aaron M.’s reservations about some of the art).

(Cover by Michael Allred, Vertigo Comics)

iZombie 9 means D&D, Horatio & Gwen on a hot date, Diogenes against the world (of sexy, paintballin’ vampires), Galatea’s plans slowly revealed and Ellie on a mission to re-tangible herself. Chris Roberson and Michael Allred, please never stop making this superb comic.

Birds of Lantern Academy

(Cover by Stanley "Artgerm" Lau, DC Comics)

Oh man, it’s Birds of Prey 7!!! We finally get to find out what exactly “The Death of Oracle” means and I couldn’t be more excited! Now, I missed the Return of Bruce Wayne so I barely know a thing about this Internet 3.0 business. However, my money is on Oracle being publicly killed off in a ruse so that she can work behind the scenes setting up all this Batman, Inc. business. Possibly paving the way for Proxy to step up in the cyber-crimefighting department? I DON’T KNOW! So exciting, shake ups, shake downs, shake all arounds and sure to be another excellent issue.

(Cover by David Finch & Scott Williams)

Brightest Day 16 is ACTUALLY happening this week, ugh. You guys, I use the main site for DC and Marvel to figure out what’s coming out when and the weeks there’s a holiday in the US they are guaranteed to lead me astray! So I apologize but look for Aquagirl and more on Aqualad this week! Lots of water comin’ at ya! The JLA is just going to love having all those Black Lanterns back, especially with Firestorm an inch away from eradicating reality. As spread out as the story is, I continue to enjoy it.

(Cover by Doug Mahnke & Christian Alamy, DC Comics)

Green Lantern 60 gives us more on Proselyte and the Indigo Corps, my personal favorites! I went on and on during the last podcast about why I love them (and Geoff Johns, for his spectrum of Corps) but I can’t wait to see how the tensions on earth play out and just how this enigmatic tribe fits into it all. Great stuff!

(Cover by Tim Bradstreet, Marvel Comics)

Avengers Academy 7 marks the return of Giant Man! Yay? As a person who only recently started reading Avengers stuff, that probably means less to me than the long-time fans. Plus, wasn’t Hank Pym just like two other codenames a week ago? But really, who cares?! This creative team is kicking serious ass and doing it with new, engaging characters! I’m on board until there’s no train left to be on.

(Cover by Fabrizio Fiorentino, DC Comics)

If I needed any more proof that Brightest Day has me in its thrall, Titans 30 is there to remind me that I’m hooked for the long haul. Not a bad story at all and I hate to come across as such a negative Nancy about it…I suppose it’s just not my cup of tea. I definitely want to find out what Slade has planned for his Titans and I loved the Black Adam family in 52 but anti-heroics don’t turn my crank. Even when the Titans have to join sides with Batman against the inmates of Arkham! See? It’s all cool ideas and pretty cool art but just not what I’m looking for in a man.

Fanged, White Zombie-Cyclones

Comics actually hit stores tomorrow for us in the USA but that won’t stop me from opining on the titles today!

(Cover by David Finch & Scott Williams, DC Comics)

Brightest Day 15 is the headliner on this light week in comics. Aqualad explores the full depths of his powers, Aquagirl joins the fight between Arthur and Manta and Firestorm comes knocking at the JLA’s door for help ridding the world of Deathstorm and the other Black Lanterns! We’re chugging along in the series and I can’t help but wonder how this will all read once the dust settles. Such a massively spread out story told over so many months is quite a gamble. So far I’ve come to love the tale but who knows where the finale will lead us!

(Cover by Freddie Williams II, DC Comics)

Ah, JSA All-Stars 13, it’s good to see you on the shelves. You’ve certainly had your ups and downs but I think you’ve really yet to hit your stride! Sturges is pulling a few clichés out of his writing bag of tricks but still manages to make all your characters pretty darn endearing and unique! Cyclone is up against…Cy-Clones this week as she has to adjust to a life without powers. All alone with super-cute stockings, what’s a girl to do? The All-Stars are stuck in space so it’s up to my favorite Wicked fangirl to take care of business on earth! Really, if you like the recent JSA stuff then pick up All-Stars.

(Cover by Michael Allred, Vertigo Comics)

The sure thing this week is iZombie 8 because I’m pretty sure Chris Roberson and Michael Allred can do no wrong. Gwen’s getting a blast from her past, Spot’s rooming with family, Heart Throb Monster Hunters, Inc. are in a street fight with the vampirellas! Cute, quirky, beautifully drawn. That’s a comic worth reading, folks.

I Am A White Flash!

(Cover by John Romita, Jr., Marvel Comics)

I’ve got a hell and a half of comics to read this week so it’s time for some quick reviews of the previews (as I do…es)! Avengers 7 make Hulk festive and red? To a non-Hulk-reader this is neither enticing or uninviting. It’s been a fun ride up to this point so why not, right? Pretty as ever.

(Cover by David Finch, DC Comics)

Look at that GQ mofo on the cover of Brightest Day 14! Could Bats be the White Knight? J’onn is out of his mind on Mars, the Firestorm(s) are playing catchup to Deathstorm and the Hawks are getting intimate with their past lives! Still worth it.

(Cover by Jesus Saiz, DC Comics)

Zatanna 7 is penned by Adam Beechen and has our Mistress of Magic attending the grand opening of the Magic Museum! We learn more about her father and Zatanna tackles some angry clothing as only she can.

(Cover by Doug Mahnke & Christian Alamy, DC Comics)

Green Lantern 59 stars my favorite Corps as we finally learn where they went with the guy who started the Blackest Night! Windiebird loves an answer, y’all!

(Cover by Tyler Kirkham & BATT, DC Comics)

Green Lantern Corps 54 gets some aggression out as Sinestro and Kyle punch each other around the block! All in the name of rescuing Soranik, I guess…

(Cover by Francis Manapul, DC Comics)

Francis Manapul drew a comic, you guys! The Flash 6 is that comic and if you need any further inspiration to pick up your copy, we’re getting closer and closer to Captain Boomerang’s White Lantern task and the much-hyped Flashpoint event!

(Cover by Dan Jurgens & Jerry Ordway, DC Comics)

Superman meets Doomsday in DCU Legacies 7 and his coma/death marks another milestone in the ongoing history of my favorite fictional universe. Simply a great time if you’re a DC fan. Maybe not the most consistent for a newcomer since a lot of the joy comes from recognizing and reliving events but well worth the money.

(Cover by Mark Bagley & Rob Hunter, DC Comics)

Justice League of America 51 continues the brawl between the JLA and the Crime Syndicate! They don’t do it for everyone but I LOVE this incarnation of the JLA and am especially glad to see Starman and Congorilla get so much love. Good times, great oldies as they say!

Hope for the Zombie Academy

(Cover by Mike McKone, Marvel Comics)

It’s Reptil’s chance to shine in the spotlight this week in Avengers Academy 6. With Humberto elected team leader, will he crack under the pressure? I mean, the cover makes it pretty clear but still! What lies underneath that sweet exterior? So far, the series has been pure excellence. With Finesse doing her creepy, polymath thing on Quicksilver and another Avengers guest appearance I’m sure this will be another gold-star winner. Still my favorite Avengers title!

(Cover by David Finch, DC Comics)

Brightest Day 13 puts us squarely at the center of the mega crossover event and Batman is going to look pretty shnazzy in his wedding cowl! The hunt for the really-real wielder of the White Lantern continues across the earth, the Martian Manhunter remains in psychic peril, Professor Stein is all swirled up in the Deathstorm entity and we finally get another glimpse of Hawkman’s story…with him being betrayed to the enemy! Brightest Day was slow to start and maybe a little broadly planned for some readers but it’s picked up the pace and started to get up and grab me every time a new one hits the shelves.

(Cover by Tim Bradstreet, Marvel Comics)

Generation Hope 1 finally reveals the Fifth Light! Hope’s arrival gave new mutants to the world…but not as simply as they’d appeared before. All had painful transformations that only Hope could soothe and complete in them. The four lights found so far also seem to have a strange, psychic subservience to her as well. The Fifth Light could be a villain or a hero (in Tokyo!) but I’m still more curious about the leading lady herself! I’m excited to give this book a go.

(Cover by Michael Allred, Vertigo Comics)

iZombie 7 is going to be another issue worth $10.99, let alone the $2.99 entry fee it’s priced at. Chris Roberson and Michael Allred have created something truly unique and beautiful. It’s like all the best things of Buffy, Dead Like Me & Scooby Doo blended up and molded into something even more insane and gripping. Gwen has to eat another brain but it’s a familiar one from her youth this time! Ellie and Amon share some tricks of the trade and Spot goes to the comic shop! Galatea gets her mad science on with some corpses and the sensual, woobly-making monster hunters are on the trail of the Mean Girls Vamps. It’s gonna be good!

(Cover by Freddie Williams II, DC Comics)

In JSA All-Stars 12 Cyclone is left alone on earth while the rest of the team heads into space to confront a new threat! Something’s strange with her new, powerless existence and it’s clear it didn’t happen naturally. Who’s targeting the fastest talking red head in the west? The fallout won’t be pretty if her recent windsplosion is any measure. OKAY GUYS, Freddie Williams II who is a beautiful, radiant human being…is finally off art duties! Fingers crossed for the new art team to pick up  in that department because the story has been a joy so far!

Zombies, History & the Technicolor Ragcoat

(Cover by David Finch, DC Comics)

Brightest Day 12 has the Black Lanterns bein’ all back and stuff! Was the White Lantern resurrection just a temporary fix? Can the returnees complete their Tasks before it’s too late? Will the new Aqualad get some paternal resolution? Will Deathstorm continue to be from the 90s? Hopefully all will be revealed in this weeks installment of Brightest Day. Almost halfway done already, how time flies!

(Cover by George Perez, DC Comics)

DCU Legacies 6 continues as the Crisis was barely averted! Only in time for the Invasion to hit. The DCU just can’t catch a break! This is a must-read if you like DC in any way shape or form. Every page is a lovingly drawn homage to the comic publisher. The greatest love of all is happening to DC, y’all, and I couldn’t be happier to pick up the results every month.

(Cover by Gene Ha, DC Comics)

*in the tone of a drunk homosexual at a block party* It’s Halloween, bitchezzzzz! This year’s DCU Halloween Special 2010 has heroes and villains alike teaming up to thwart some spooky badness loose on the streets. Solomon Grundy demand candy corns!

(Cover by Tyler Kirkham & Batt, DC Comics)

Green Lantern Corps 53 sheds some light on what Qward’s Weaponer has been up to collecting the remnants of the White Lantern’s energy trail. He’s targeting Sinestro (I mean…who isn’t, really?) for past ills and he won’t be happy until there’s blood shed. Kyle Rayner’s got some bones to pick himself since Soranik’s in the crosshairs!

(Cover by Ethan Van Sciver, DC Comics)

Justice League of America 50 pits the new JLA against the Crime Syndicate thanks to Dr. Impossible and it couldn’t come at a worse time. Jade is still reeling from that preeeeetty icky dualistic identity crisis with her brother AND the Black Lantern inside her won’t let her be. It’s not easy being green.

(Cover by Jesus Saiz, DC Comics)

Ragman: Suit of Souls is a one-shot I’m hoping could turn into a new series. I’ve only recently been introduced to Rory Regan (the current Ragman) in the Shadowpact series but the possibilities inherent in his backstory and setup are endless. You want tasteful angst that delves into the deeply conflicted psychodrama of the human spirit? Look no further than the Suit of Souls! Hundreds of once-vile souls reside in the garment, allowing the possessor to allocate the pain he would feel among them, draw strength from them, etc. so that they might find redemption. Add a healthy dollop of daddy issues and Jewish guilt and you’ve got one hell of a hero.

Werevamps on the Fiery, Lightning-wind!

(Cover by David Finch & Scott Williams, DC Comics)

Brightest Day 11 has the return of the Black Lanterns! Well, kinda, but we’ll have to see just how extensive their appearances are. Deathstorm is born to the world and universe-halting power can’t be a good thing in the hands of a lunatic who is ON FIRE! Aqualad has his daddy issues literally fight it out in front of him and Black Manta (who is actually black, just thought that was funny enough to repeat) pushes his nefarious agenda. This second act of Brightest Day is shaping up beautifully so far.

(Cover by Freddie Williams II, DC Comics)

JSA All-Stars 11 is the conclusion of the “Glory Days” storyline and things are not looking good for Cyclone! The Paradorans are going down (of course, Peeg is on the scene!) but it’s going to cost the All-Stars. It’s also the conclusion of the Liberty Belle/Hourman co-feature as the Staff they’ve finally tracked down may actually spell doom for the world. Those pesky ancients and their doomsday relics! Solid book and only getting better!

(Cover by Rafael Albuquerque, Vertigo)

American Vampire 7 continues Scott Snyder’s triumphant solo stint on the title (following his epic collaboration with Stephen King) as Skinner Sweet becomes the prime suspect in a very vampiric murder case. The detective working it has to deal with a town gone mad, some bizarre meddling from two FBI agents and a chip on his shoulder. How to place chips on shoulders is required in basic training, right? Oh, and of course Skinner is running a House of Ill Repute now. Love Rafael Albuquerque’s are here too!

(Cover by Michael Allred, Vertigo Comics)

iZombie 6 is all about Spot, the were-Terrier (yes, the series is that amazing), as we delve into his furry past! How did he come to be an adorable creature of the night? What terrible secrets lie in his past? Dog shows? Graveyards? MIT? I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Chris Roberson & Michael Allred are making this one hell of a comic. Really, a must-buy for anyone.

(Cover by Mike McKone, Marvel Comics)

My favorite band of teenage anti-heroes is in for a bad day in Avengers Academy 5. Striker has always had attention issues (to put it mildly) but his thirst for fame might be putting the Academy at risk this week as they make a public outing, tempting him to get blast-y. Survival might be more important than secrecy though, as Whirlwind comes knocking at Hank Pym’s door for revenge! Justice also gets some sexy face-lip action this week. Jam-packed with super drama and still my favorite new Avengers title!

-windiebird

The Children Have One Bright Month To Live!

(Cover by Jimmy Cheung, Marvel Comics)

Avengers: The Children’s Crusade #2 finally hits us right where we like it! X-Men vs. Avengers and the Young Avengers caught in the dramatic crossfire? Sign me up! We get some answers about the Scarlet Witch’s disappearance after the events of M-Day and the kids get closer to their goal of finding Wiccan and Speed’s real parent(s?). With such a fantastic start to this mini-series, this is sure to be topping the bill every week I can get my hands on it!

(Cover by David Finch, DC Comics)

Brightest Day #9 SHOULD finally have J’onn show his pretty, green face in Star City as well as the big reveal of the new Aqualad’s powers! More White Lantern mysteries abound in New Mexico too, this stuff is getting pretty good, folks.

(Art by Andrea Mutti & Koi Turnbull, Marvel Comics)

Now, I think I admit often enough that I’m not really a huge Marvel Universe reader. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a hatred thing. I just don’t find myself as drawn to the 616 stories. When something as creative as Heroic Age: One Month To Live come along, though, you have my full attention! Dennis Sykes has one month to live and an accidental dosage of super-powers to accompany his impending doom! Can this average Joe make a difference in just five weeks? I’m excited to find out how well this creative team can pull the idea off!

(Cover by Freddie Williams II, DC Comics)

JSA All-Stars #10 marks the continued upward spiral for the All-Stars! I feel like now that the characters have a real chance just to breathe and grow as themselves without being rushed around by events or crossovers, it’s starting to shine. The drug-gods of Parador (See?! You should read this!) are up against Power Girl this week as King Chimera reveals more of his past in Cyclone’s recovery room. The back-up feature has two more issues to go then it’ll be even more space for the All-Stars to get their development on!

Other titles of interest include:

Freedom Fighters #1, America! Fuck yeah!

iZombie #5, Gwen and her Scoobies are amazing! One of my favorite books right now!

Wolverine #1 & Wolverine: Road to Hell, Logan is the new Deadpool and I’m not a fan of that.

X-Men: Curse of the Mutants – Smoke & Blood, it’s the X-Club’s turn in the spotlight for the Vampires/Mutants throwdown! Love those three so much.

Young Allies #4, didn’t grab me in issue three but I still generally like the characters? It’s a book I feel a little guilty for dropping but drop it I did.

-windiebird

Just J(anet)SA

(Cover by Mark Bagley & Jesus Merino, DC Comics)

It’s the Justice Conglomerate versus the Starheart in JSA #42 this week! Even their might won’t cut it, though, so who better to lend a light-sucking hand than Shade? If you’ve been hoping for a point to catch up with the current JSA OR the JLA I’d start with this crossover. Well drawn and both books are well scripted.

(Cover by Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez & Dave Gibbons, DC Comics)

The Teen Titans are taking over in DCU Legacies #4! The Silver Age had babies and they’re kicking ass…in green faerie boots! Seriously, I couldn’t be happier to watch DC discover the greatest love of all. It’s all about the in-house love and it’s splendidly done.

(Cover by David Finch, DC Comics)

Brightest Day #8 not only features one fine, feathered lady as the A cover but a host of delicious answers as well! I won’t spoil the turning points in issue 7 but let’s just say that this stuff got some serious kinds of real! Who is the White Entity (I mean…let’s not do those jokes, I guess?) and is Boston Brand Deadman enough to make things right? The Hawks are getting bloody on Hawkworld, Firestorm is…an unstable nuclear disaster waiting to happen, J’onn is hot on the trail of the Martian murders & Aquaman is plumbing Mera’s depths. And the mysteries of Mera’s depths. In all honesty, this series is completely worth it now! To all the naysayers, I promise things have been made right.

Batman Beyond #3 puts us squarely halfway into the new mini-series. I would say that this might be a better trade purchase than individual issue purchase if you haven’t bought into it yet. Plenty of enjoyable action but neither the story or art is making me jump for joy. Worth the money if you’re a fan of the show, though, of course.

(Cover by Ardian Syaf, DC Comics)

Cyborg Superman and the Qwardians! If you didn’t think Brightest Day meant “Silver Age redo”, you weren’t following along! The Alpha Lanterns have been corrupted in Green Lantern Corps #51 and it’s up to Hannu to save our beleaguered Lanterns from cyborg-erization. For not having read more than an issue of this series, I’m surprising myself with how excited I am to follow along. A nice comic with some interesting Brightest Day connections.

-windiebird

SDCC and Beyond!

We were not able to attend the San Diego Comic Con, but we do have some SDCC updates.  First off Batman Beyond will be returning to comics some time in the future, once the current miniseries wraps.

Art by Dustin Nguyen

In other DC news Grant Morrison will take on the character Captain Marvel in a title called Thunder World.  Morrison will also be writing for a new Bat-title which will team Batman with many unlikely allies, called Batman INC.  Then Geoff John announced Bightest Day will not be the end to the events of Blackest Night, there will be another story arc after Brightest Day.  Plus we will be seeing a Green Lantern video game and a Suicide Squad video game.

In Marvel news it’s finally official Joss Whedon will be directing the Avengers movie.  Also there will be a new X-title called Generation Hope.  This title will focus on Hope and the five new mutants born at the end of the Second Coming story arc.  This is a break down of what has happened thus far, we will try to keep you updated as always.

-Aaron M
