Artist Watch; Jesse Rubenfeld

I stumbled across Jesse Rubenfeld while perusing ‘The Tumblr’ and witnessed his meshing of Renaissance art with superheroes in a rendition of the Sistine Chapel that features the legion of substitute heroes a-la D.C., instead of the full Legion members. I must say that I have always appreciated classical renaissance art [as well as the kindness of strangers] so I was more than please when Jesse wrote me back and agreed to let me post his work on Mutant A Day!

His beautiful Sistine Chapel is ongoing, and you can see more of his pieces HERE and keep up with him as he continues to work on this massive project. Oh Martian Man Hunter, you had me at “By all the gods of Mars! They think I’m the cartoon character!”.

MaD was JUST discussing how Gordon-Levitt would be fantastic as Robin in a Teen Titans movie. Who’da thunk that hollywood might be gearing up for him to play villian, Riddler, in Batman 3?!?

MaD does infact have a pretty gyne-ormous crush on one Mr. Reynolds, however his monopoly on comic book characters frightens us just a tad or it makes us want his “pizza place” even more! What are YOUR thoughts? Do you think he should star in the new Green Lantern movie? It’s poll time!

Mutant A Day loves toys, and as the production of new mighty muggs have slowed a bit we are looking for the cuteness to satisfy our hero worship!

In early 2010 DC is set to introduce BLAMMOIDS to retailers near you. And we are uber excited about collecting! These hexagonal heroes and villains send our hearts a flutter!

My dear people, I have discovered the most perfect idea to come out of the comics industry in ages.

THE BACKLOG COLLECTION!

I am not omniscient. THERE, I’ve said it! I admit my faults and I have faith that we can all grow from here.

But seriously, I don’t eat, sleep & breathe comics. I love the art-form but I’ve never even read many characters and books.

So things like Marvel’s comic collection offering is sold under the name Essentials and has introduced me to the corniness of old-school Incredible Hulk (written by Stan Lee, of course). Which is fantastic!

I haven’t personally checked out DC’s offering which they call Archive Editions yet but I look forward to that as well.

I mean, it’s about the perfect way to catch up on stories you might have missed, right?

Always wondered how the new X-Men started? Go check out Volume One of the X-Men Essentials! Want to see just how cheesy the Metal Men were back in their heyday? GO CHECK IT! There’s no color in the Essentials collections but the line-art and text is exactly the same and the price is lower than the Archive Editions which update and preserve the original coloring and full effect of the artwork.

A classic DC/Marvel conundrum, I tells ya.

Just be sure to give these lovely gems a once-over the next time you’re in your local shop, you never know what arcs you’ll be able to re-read or enjoy for the very first time…like a virgin.

Iceman & Jimmy…Happy Birthday!

So yesterday, thanks to the comic world’s cutest twins, Aaron & Shawn Ashmore, was the merging of the DC and Marvel Universe INTO ONE BLOG!!! Why, you ask? It’s because yesterday was their birthday! (they are 21 29)

Aaron, Smallville’s Jimmy Olsen & Shawn, X-Men’s Bobby Drake (a.k.a. Iceman) are two Canadians that add so much to the live-action versions of their print counterparts. I’d say (and I think many would agree) that in a world where Bryan Singer casts Halle Berry as Storm, someone else would take the lead (um, whoever that may have been) and cast Shawn as Iceman, which is more than a perfect fit!

So this Happy Belated Birthday goes out to Shawn & Aaron. Enjoy the pics!
