What a View!

(art by Mike Perkins)

This morning on The View, the panel was given the great honor of being the first to announce Marvel’s most important wedding in years! In Astonishing X-Men 50, out this week, we will be seeing Northstar’s (Jean-Paul Beaubier) proposal to longtime boyfriend Kyle. Thank you Marjorie Liu, Marvel, and the great state of New York! Be sure to follow along in the book, it’s been a solid run so far.

Josh Adams (and Steve and Eve)

That adorable Doctor Who piece up there is from none other than Josh Adams, multi-talented illustrator and inker well known for his work on IDW’s Doctor Who and his contributions to the Astonishing X-Men motion comics. We had the privilege to interview him briefly at Dallas Comic Con 2012 today and were completely taken with him. Not only were his prints and portfolio eye-catching but one of his current projects, Adam, Eve & Steve (name in progress) is one of the most inventive pitches I’ve heard in years.

Essentially, the biblical story remains much the same with Adam & Even being created for each other but the quintessential couple is thrown a curveball when a time-lost guy from the future (Steven) finds his way into the Garden of Eden and becomes the cause of some sexual awakening in our first man. Such a simple and intriguing line already has me hooked but there is no definitive start date at this point, sadly.

That shouldn’t stop you from checking out the homepage for the comic and bugging the heck out of the creators with your love until they get this great concept in motion! Be sure to check out Josh’s Doctor Who continuing series artwork as well (and check the handsome man himself out below).

TAKEI BACK the NIGHT!

Our friends over at GEEKSOUT.org are hosting an art show, geek party and fundraiser in honor of George Takei’s 75th Birthday! Check out the information below and take part in this awesome event!

George Takei has gone where no man has gone before. He’s been a Japanese internment camp survivor, a swashbuckling star-ship pilot, a civic do-gooder, a fanboy peace-broker, and a booming voice for marriage equality. He’s more than just a star on the Hollywood Boulevard sidewalk. George Takei is a positive force for good in the universe! There’s no one quite like him in American pop culture and we want to pay homage his work, life, and handsome face.

Geeks OUT is holding its big annual fundraiser with a night of artwork inspired by everyone’s favorite gay sci-fi icon. Would you like to donate artwork? Send an email to submissions@geeksout.org.

But regardless of whether you’re an artist or not, please join us for this big and geeky celebration.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Geeks OUT, an organization out to rally and represent the growing community of comics and sci-fi fans who are queer. Geeks OUT holds monthly social events and establishes a queer-positive presence at comic conventions. For more information, visit www.geeksout.org.

Would you like to volunteer to help out with the event? Contact Joey at info@geeksout.org.

Teddy Bear!

After reading Young Avengers; Children’s Crusade #9 [yes people I finally caught up], it really made me think about relationships and flowers and gardners! And really just gave me an excuse to have our Mutant/Other Worlder [who says "alien" anymore?] of the week be the hunky, beautiful jolly green gardner Dorek VIII a.k.a Theodore ‘Teddy’ Altman a.k.a HULKLING! As one of the few openly gay superheroes in any comic universe, it’s nice to see him portrayed as a pretty put together individual in a succesful relationship headed towards marriage. Can you tell I am a little invested in it all! Check out Teddy in Childrens Crusade #9 and check out this wonderful piece-of-art by Jacopo Camagni!

Avengers Academy; A Light Speed Shocker!

Well, it’s not so much shocking really. Who didn’t call it? I got a vibe from Striker in his first appearance of Avengers Academy, and hello he’s a ficitonal character, but he does look like he’s been shopping in Northstars closet. Am I right ladies?

But alas, it is nice to see more LGBT diversity in the Marvel universe. And speaking of, hello lady Lightspeed [Julie Power] putting the B back in LGBT. Let us not forget those who love who they love and defy those who tell them to “choose a side” within our gay umbrella of a community. I certainly hope this new outing will make his character less obnoxious and bring a new leading gay female character into the forfront of comics again (How I miss Runaways).  Striker reminds me of if Niel Patrick Harris and Tony Stark had a baby. HUZZAH!

Ultimate X-Men Makes It’s Return!

This September the Ultimate X-Men return, which we all know what that means gay Colossus!

Art by Mark Brooks

Ultimate Comics X-Men will be written by Nick Spencer and  drawn by Paco Medina.  The series will relaunch continuing with the continuity that has already been established in the Ultimate universe.  This title will have the feel of “Days Of Future Past” where mutants are becoming extinct, and are hunted down by order of the government. The X- Roster will consist of Kitty Pryde, Storm, Colossus, Iceman, Jimmy Hudson, Johnny Storm, Liz Allan and Karen Grant aka Jean Grey.  Rogue will also be a big part of this title, which it has been stated that this is a Rogue and Kitty focused book.  September is going to be a great month for comics with the release of Batwoman and now the relaunch of Ultimate X-Men.

Comics: Upside The Head!

Here at MaD we like to take a PSA break to forward you to sites that really are fighting the good fight for the LGBT community, even if they are in other countries. Slap Upside The Head  is a great news/political website that uses comic strips and satire to get their point across! Funny and enlightening, they are certainly something everyone should check out with posts every Monday, Wednesday and Friday!
