Frankly, I never liked the previous installment, I much preferred the stamp-esque version from the 90′s. It felt time appropriate. This new set of logos however, is way more design conscious. It’s not like some 15 year old douchebag was hired to oversee something that would have a larger effect on the comic community in the future. [wink]

 The design, which was previously referred to by many as a pudding cup or a condom wrapper, is smart, and a great way to integrate the comics and characters of DC back into the logo. As shown above, they are really making the new logo work for them. It’s mature and innovative enough for new DC readers and exciting and fun enough for people who have been around Superman’s block a few times!

The Ray 2 continues the new mini-series written by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti which started off so refreshingly upbeat, humorous and light-hearted that I simply can’t wait to see what they pull off in issue two! Lucien Gates is the Ray of the DCnUniverse and he’s quite a unique voice in modern comics already. Mixed in to some classic super-heroism, Lucien’s world is full of real and diverse people and the drama reflects that fully. Every piece of dialogue either brought a smile to my face or taught me who the character was in issue 1. If you like superheros, you will like this comic.

The Shade 4 is James Robinson’s first “Times Past” comics of this limited series and is illustrated by the should-be-amazing team of Darwyn Cooke and J. Bone! It’s WWII and Shade – in the midst of his rise to villainous stardom –  is helping an industrialist on the side of the Allies survive an assassination attempt in what is slated as Shade’s new origin! Should be an excellent ride as the last three issues have been, for Starman fans or not.

Wolverine and the X-Men 4 sees the addition of two new students to the Jean Grey Institute as well as the news of a pregnant mutant in the school? I just fully got on board with this title last issue after not feeling the first two as much as I thought I would. Kid Krakoa got me on all the right levels and now I can’t wait to see how Jason Aaron continues to steer this strange, new (and old) ship going forward.

Penguin: Pain and Prejudice 2 is on track to be my favorite of the week if all the well-crafted, anguished character work remains from the first issue. That was the perfect example of why a novelist can absolutely shine in the sequential storytelling medium and I have the utmost hopes for this week. Pain, revenge, guns and The Batman!

Again with the DC miniseries! Huntress 2 is absolutely ~my jam~! Helena gets the spotlight all to herself, kicking ass and being a totally righteous defender of the innocent. With Marcus To and John Dell on visuals, she even does it all looking entirely fashionable and fierce. Loving Guillem March for these covers as well. Guess it’s hard to hyper-sexualize someone when they wear body armor but lord knows he’s trying. Anyways, the end result is a book you should read from issue one to six (the final chapter)!

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man 4 marks not only what is sure to be another banner entry into the Ultimate Marvel universe with one of the most relatable characters in comics history but the first Kaare Andrews cover I really dig as well! Needless snark aside, we get more glimpses into how Miles’ powers work and more of his steps to becoming the new Spider-Man are revealed. It’s pricier than some books but this is an instance where you are absolutely paying for quality.

Batwoman 2, if anything like the first issue (and the Detective run of the character before), will simply be must-read material. It’s been perfectly new-reader friendly from what I gather and – seriously – this art must be seen to be believed. J. H. Williams III, Amy Reeder & William H. Blackman seem to have an excellent formula for making this a title that should be on every fan’s list. Get in before it’s too late! The fun bus waits for no one!

X-Men: Regenesis bridges the Schism event with the official Regenesis-branded relaunch of the X-books and I’m very excited about it, if slightly unsure about what this one-shot will provide us with. Clearly, it’s the issue where the line drawn in the meteorite by Wolverine & Cyclops (with their dicks, of course) will be spelled out for each of the mutants on Utopia and we’ll see who is on who’s side but will we see the status quo of each of the books set up? Will there be big bads introduced? Much mystery surrounds it but I have a feeling this will be more for fans who have follows so far and not necessarily for new fans looking to jump on to a title after the event hits.

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man 3 is going to be one hell of a comic! I say this with full confidence in a lead duo that have yet to fail us and I don’t see how they ever could. Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli are pure talent and pure creators. They’re telling Miles’ story with such empathy, humor and intrigue that I don’t see how this wasn’t number one in September! I say this every time about books I like but trust that this is well worth the price point. If you’ve ever been a teenager, you can connect with this young man struggling with a new experience and a dangerous world.

These are pretty cool but I’m still hoping to see the classic Lego mini figures where you build vehicles or buildings.  Come on am I the only one that wants to build Superman’s Fortress of Solitude “wink”, Wonder Woman’s Invisible Jet, or even the legendary Asgard from Thor.

Batwoman 1 is the title everyone should read from the DCnU, no excuses. Amy Reeder and J. H. Williams III are absolutely genius. We can only hope W. Haden Blackman and J. H. Williams III have Kate down but with so much preparation time and so much fan feedback, I don’t see how they could miss the important steps (not to mention Williams’ original run with Greg Rucka). Bring on the Hydrology!

Buffy The Vampire Slayer – Season 9: Freefall 1 is our introduction to a world without Slayers (as well as Season 9). Buffy is a waitress once more trying to find her way in a world that she has largely disrupted in an attempt to make it better. Friends have died and some still hate her. She has no purpose but what she makes. Honestly, this season 6/dark/desperate vibe is one I really connect with. Joss Whedon even took out time from The Avengers to make this top-notch so this must be worth it! Love that Steve Morris cover, as well.

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man 1 marks Miles Morales’ first solo title as the new Spider-Man and I couldn’t be happier to see it arrive! The little we’ve seen of him in Death of Spider-Man assured me that Brian Michael Bendis could make it work. The Ultimate world is tense right now and Miles has to deal with the past of Peter Parker while still attempting to be a hero. A perfect recipe for a comic! Old fans and interested newbies should feel confident in picking this up.

In January 2012 Lego will release 13 figures which include Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Lex Luthor, Haley Quinn and Bane.  Then later in the summer more merchandise will be released centering around the move  The Dark Knight Rises.  

I obviously want to  see my favorite DC characters in Lego form, but I’m hoping that this will lead to a Lego Justice League game.

It’s finally here! X-Men Schism 1 arrives to fanfare, making up for the lackluster prelude (fingers crossed, anyways) and to bust up the Marvel mutant status quo! Anti-mutant sentiment is inflamed by a mutant terrorist (maybe a cell?) adding more pressure to the already stressed and provoked X-teams. An ideological crack is forming in the bedrock of Utopia and it looks like it’s only going to get worse! Beautiful covers always start an event off on the right foot.

Green Lantern 67 comes to us all kinds of late but is technically the end of the War of the Green Lanterns, which I have enjoyed as a kind of movie-on-page event. With the major loss (as well as many smaller losses) still looming over Oa and Krona’s mad Entity-Guardians thrashing the Earth-born Lanterns we can only light a candle for Geoff Johns and pray he has it in him to bring this cinematic crossover to the conclusion it deserves without unfinished plots flailing about. It’s been a blast so far and well worth it for any Lantern fans out there!

Survival of the Fittest 2 continues this week and, boy, I don’t see how the quality of the first issue could falter with this creative team! Sean Murphy is amazing, Scott Snyder is amazing and the set up is pure gold. Felicia and Cash are on their way to Romania for the fabled cure to vampirism but find themselves in trouble as Nazis (of course) shoot down their transport cutting the flight short. Beautifully rendered action, horror and undead hijinks are sure to please once again. This is a must for any American Vampires fans (which should be everyone reading this)!

Green Arrow 12 is (of course) my most anticipated title of the week! And not just because I always love to read about my favorite character but because this is going to be JT Krul’s first legitimately self-inspired take on the title. Well, mostly, he has to deal with the aftermath of Brightest Day (Galahad, the Demon and the Star City Forest) but where we head now in the series is largely up to him and his editor, not the Brightest Day event team. Here’s to an inspired future for the Emerald Archer, long live the Queen!

American Vampire 15 is sure to be another excellent entry in the WWII-era arc of this always top-notch series. We get more of the creepy new vamps attacking Henry’s troop, Skinner being a grade-A ass and Pearl determined to help her human mans out. It can never be said enough that if you even kind of enjoy the stories people can tell with vampires, you will love this series. It’s a fresh take on the well-worn vampiric mythos and I can’t recall a dull issue from the outset. Rafael Albuquerque and Scott Snyder OTP!

JSA 51 is the Marc Guggenheim issue I’ve been waiting for since he took over the title. Not that I haven’t been feeling the Monument Point storyline more and more as the arc progresses but this little side adventure into the mystical realms with Doctor Fate and Lightning is the kind of comic I’m all about! I dug much of the old Doctor Fate series and he has always been my favorite JSA character. The mixture of the human and the arcane always flips mah switches and with Lightning’s very soul on the line, things are sure to be tense!

Green Arrow 7 introduces another character emerging from the Star City Forest, the Lady of the (Night) Forest! I mean, good stuff so far, no doubt about it…but the cast of new characters is growing mighty quick and there are some grumblings from the Arrow Family fans about the lack of Connor and Mia. It’s really only 7 issues in, so I’m not worries about anything. Lovely visuals and a very solid characterization of Mr. Queen, which is all I need from a Green Arrow comic.

It’s Spectre v. Butcher v. Hal Jordan in Green Lantern 61! Entities are dropping like flies but will the Big Red one even survive to be captured by Krona? Probably going to be a bit of a filler issue but a FUN one and there’s nothing wrong with that!

JLA/The 99 3 continues this totally rockin’ crossover series that I implore everyone to catch up on ASAP if you’ve missed it! Pure joy up to this point and no sign of that stopping. The 99 are a fascinating group and easily stand next to the JLA and this mini-series has been the perfect introduction for them to the wider DC market (which included me, of course).

As the JSA is rebuilding Monument Point in JSA 46 new heroes and villains are taking advantage of the ensuing chaos. It’s been an interesting regime-change for the team and it’s clear the Marc Guggenheim is still warming up his personal take on the characters. Still the world’s finest supergroup.

I’m a little worried about Anya, you guys. Spider-Girl 2 pits her against the Red Hulk and while I have no idea who he or she is…I know the once-Arana is in serious trouble. The first issue was wholly enjoyable and piqued my interest for a few issues yet to come. Don’t forget to follow her on twitter too!

Oh man, it’s Birds of Prey 7!!! We finally get to find out what exactly “The Death of Oracle” means and I couldn’t be more excited! Now, I missed the Return of Bruce Wayne so I barely know a thing about this Internet 3.0 business. However, my money is on Oracle being publicly killed off in a ruse so that she can work behind the scenes setting up all this Batman, Inc. business. Possibly paving the way for Proxy to step up in the cyber-crimefighting department? I DON’T KNOW! So exciting, shake ups, shake downs, shake all arounds and sure to be another excellent issue.

Brightest Day 16 is ACTUALLY happening this week, ugh. You guys, I use the main site for DC and Marvel to figure out what’s coming out when and the weeks there’s a holiday in the US they are guaranteed to lead me astray! So I apologize but look for Aquagirl and more on Aqualad this week! Lots of water comin’ at ya! The JLA is just going to love having all those Black Lanterns back, especially with Firestorm an inch away from eradicating reality. As spread out as the story is, I continue to enjoy it.

Green Lantern 60 gives us more on Proselyte and the Indigo Corps, my personal favorites! I went on and on during the last podcast about why I love them (and Geoff Johns, for his spectrum of Corps) but I can’t wait to see how the tensions on earth play out and just how this enigmatic tribe fits into it all. Avengers Academy 7 marks the return of Giant Man! Yay? As a person who only recently started reading Avengers stuff, that probably means less to me than the long-time fans. Plus, wasn’t Hank Pym just like two other codenames a week ago? But really, who cares?! This creative team is kicking serious ass and doing it with new, engaging characters! I’m on board until there’s no train left to be on.

If I needed any more proof that Brightest Day has me in its thrall, Titans 30 is there to remind me that I’m hooked for the long haul. Not a bad story at all and I hate to come across as such a negative Nancy about it…I suppose it’s just not my cup of tea. I definitely want to find out what Slade has planned for his Titans and I loved the Black Adam family in 52 but anti-heroics don’t turn my crank. Even when the Titans have to join sides with Batman against the inmates of Arkham! See? It’s all cool ideas and pretty cool art but just not what I’m looking for in a man.

Justice League of America 51 continues the brawl between the JLA and the Crime Syndicate! They don’t do it for everyone but I LOVE this incarnation of the JLA and am especially glad to see Starman and Congorilla get so much love. Good times, great oldies as they say!

Emerald Warriors 3 continues the new Green Lantern tale as Guy Gardner and the Throbbing, Red Rockets continue their stop on the Blue Lantern Corps home planet. Brother Ganesha Warth has a special task for our ginger-flavored protagonist but let’s hope it doesn’t delay his arrival in the Unknown Sectors.

Generation Lost 11 splits the newly-minted (and totally lovable) JLI into two groups to track down leads on Maxwell Lord. It’s Beetle, Booster & Atom chasing down a secret OMAC cell while Fire, Ice & Rocket Red take on the Metal Men! Did you know Mercury is the only metal that’s a liquid at room temperature?

Green Lantern 58 is so full of hope, you guys. BRIMMING WITH HOPE! Good thing Marvel can’t copyright an emotion, right? Anyways, the Hope entity finds a human host! Whether that’s a good thing or a bad one we’ve yet to see but the Corps continue to settle around the earth and the White Lantern. Hopefully, the human host isn’t fried to cinders since Hal Jordan is going on some kind of spiritual quest? AND the Spectre is about to lay some serious hurt on the Rage entity. A jam-packed week for the Lanterns!

I can never get enough JSA and the JSA 80-Page Giant out this week hits that sweet spot! It’s seven stories about Cyclone, Doctor Fate, Jesse Quick, Mr. Terrific, Obsidian, Sand and Tomcat bein’ all familial and junk. Seriously, these are always a bunch of fun and a good way for even non-readers of the main series to get a glimpse of these characters.

Titans 28 has the team of anti-heroes (which is a generous term) breaking an Arkham inmate onto the streets of Gotham! Osiris also gets closer to discovering how to finally free Isis. As pretty as the art has been I would suggest this title to Brightest Day completionists only, I’m sorry to say.

Untold Tales of Blackest Night boasts some pretty awesome ideas that never made it into the main Blackest Night storyline (or the the countless spin-offs generated from it). Ragman’s suit of souls is under attack from Black Lantern rings, Scarecrow gets suuuuuper-creepy as he explores the possibilities of wielding true Fear, Donna Troy finds herself unwillingly taken hostage by the dark light of Death and Animal Man has to deal with the crushing emotional weight of the dying planet! A great October treat!

This coaster allows the passengers to stand up through the whole 2 minute and 30 second ride.  The 15 story coaster is capable of reaching speeds of 63 miles per hour.  The ride starts out with 45 degree vertical drop and takes the rider through 5 inversions.  First the rider goes on a 121 foot tall loop, then a 103 foot dive loop followed by a 72 foot inclined loop,  finishing with a twisted double corkscrew.  This 154 tall ride sounds pretty intense.

The [Comic Book Legal Defense Fund] CBLDF is auctioning off a lunch with the amazing Geoff Johns.  Johns has worked titles such as  Teen Titans, The Flash, JSA, Superman, and Green Lantern just to name a few.  He also is responsible for the popular Blackest Night and Brightest Day Story arcs.  He is DC’s Chief Creative Officer and is the man who wrote the “Absolute Justice” and “Legion” episodes of Smallville.   All proceeds will go to protect first amendment rights and to stop censorship in comics.  Now you can have the chance to ask Mr. Johns anything that’s on your mind, and contribute to stop censorship at the same time.  Bidding has already started and will end July 21st, so click here to probe the recesses of  Geoff Johns mind.

Justice League of America #46 is the big one this week as the five-part JLA/JSA crossover The Dark Things kicks off! The Starheart has gone berserk causing magic on Earth to truly run wild. Strange weather patterns and randomly appearing metahumans are just the tip of the glowing, green iceberg that is the power of the Starheart unleashed! A trip to the Shadow Lands is in the future for the Lantern family but where will it leave them once the dust is settled?

Justice Society of America #40 finally catches up our favorite Society to the present day! Mr. Terrific’s plan to save the past and the future comes to its crashing conclusion with plenty of nazi-punchin’ action! A teammate returns to save the day but we can only wait to see if they all make it back whole. Just in time for Alan Scott to go bonkers!

Batman Beyond #1 starts us off once more with Terry McGinnis’ tale as the future Batman! As we’ve mentioned before, an unknown foe is targeting Bruce Wayne’s villains and it’s up the NeoGotham Knight to find out why. Looks like it’ll be all-gorgeous & all-genius creatively, don’t miss it!

The Flash #3 has Barry Allen facing down an all-too-familiar scene, his own death! The Renegades are still after him for the murder of Mirror Monarch but what could it all mean? Plenty of mystery still lies ahead (as is Geoff Johns’ way) but it’s sure to be a wild ride.

Green Lantern #55 pits Lobo against Atrocitus! Nothing good can come of these two hotheads beating up on each other but it’s up to Hal Jordan to save them from themselves (not to mention the rest of us). Hector Hammond returns to the scene so that he might join the New Guardians. Who can say what’s going on in the gigantic brain of his? Nothing good, that’s for sure.

Secret Avengers #2 continues this space spy story as the team digs deeper into the mystery of the Roxxon Mars drill site and the connection it has to the secret society revealed in the first issue. No one likes to have their mind-controlled and it’s even worse when it’s Nova going rogue! Let’s hope our heroic Avengers can save the day. Quietly.

Don’t forget that Mindfield #1 actually comes out today as well, absolutely a promising series if ever I’ve seen one!

The war for Utopia is on in this week’s chapter of Second Coming! X-Force #27 is a little more tight-lipped in the solicits than usual so something even more major than a giant sphere wiping out a chunk of San Francisco might happen? Still an event you should not be missing!

X-Men: Second Coming – Revelations: Blind Science is set to flesh out the current plight of the X-Club as they were pulled from Utopia to investigate a nearby oil derrick causing some massive disturbances. Bastion caught them outside the bubble for a reason but what will it be and might they still help their fellow mutants inside?

Ah, Roy Harper. He’s been Speedy, Arsenal and Red Arrow. How far the mighty have fallen. The third installment of Justice League: The Rise of Arsenal pits this ex-Titan against the new Batman and his good friend Dick…Grayson. Completely off his nut following the death of his daughter Lian, Roy has been destroying just about every facet of his previous life. I hope DC lets him be a villain for awhile. Take out his frustration on the hero community, vent that anger without harming any civilians but I pray to Gog that they don’t make him another DC anti-hero. I like anti-heroes, I do. They have a place in stories.

Just not Roy Harper, please. I’m excited, though, J.T. Krul has written some highly intense comics in these.

Secret Avengers #1 is the next book in the new Avengers tag team of serials. Promising to be part-spy, part-superhero, the concept for this team could go to great places. Really, I was sold when I saw Beast on the cover but the mere fact that Captain Turtleneck put together such a covert team is a bold move that strikes my curiosity. What he needs from them and what they’ll do to make it happen should be quite a read.

Oh man, you guys, Justice League: Generation Lost #2 couldn’t come out soon enough! Having never read much of the old JLI stories, I still was joyfully brought along on this crazy ride. Maxwell Lord’s final “I’m On A Boat (And the boat is the world)” pose is worth the price of admission in issue 1 and it clearly is going to put this reunion of the JLI through some serious drama.

Green Lantern Corps #48 continues from the “Green Lanterns Can Do It Now!” issue with the first big storyarc in the Brightest Day, “Emerald Dawn”. Ganthet’s a GL, John Stewart is back and there is a shadowy threat hiding in the membership of the Green Corps itself. Not gonna lie, I’m reading this for the Brightest Day tie-in but I don’t have much invested yet. I’d like to see that change, though.

Green Lantern #54, THE RETURN OF RAGEKITTEH! Seriously, this cat is ridiculous. In the first 6 pages it rips this random thug on a subway to shreds. Some interesting feline commentary from Geoff Johns with this character? Did we even need feline commentary? It’s the commentary we need, not the commentary we want. All the Corps jammed onto Earth is causing some serious issues but the convention is still necessary until they can sort themselves out with the mysterious new White Lantern showing it’s shiny mug. Good times are sure to be had.

The Return of Bruce Wayne is on issue 2 of 6 this week and the plot is sure to thicken as he continues to bounce forward in time and his band of fellow superheroes races like mad through the timeline to find him.

Dazzler gets some tender loving this week in her very own one-shot of disco magic! She survived Necrosha but that doesn’t mean she’s safe! Mortis is bringing the hurt to the House of Dazzler. And not a Bedazzler in sight! What’s a diva to do?

Thanos Imperative: Ignition is the start of a beautiful friendship. Or, you know, the end of the universe! Looks like the universe’s best and worst will have to band together to fend off an impossibly villainous foe in this new crossover event. Let’s hope Siege didn’t take all the fight out of the heroes because they’ll surely be needed!

The role of Martin Jordon in the the Green Lantern Movie has been cast by The Closer alumn Jon Tenney.  He will be playing the part of  a young Hal Jordan’s father, which he totally looks the part.

Fans have been drooling for a Superman/Batman live action movie for a while, well in September the next best thing will be released to a store near you. The amazing Bruce Timm is gracing us with yet another animated movie, Superman/Batman: Public Enemies.

This direct to DVD movie is based on the Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness comic book of the same name. The basic premise is Superman and Batman are framed by President Lex Luthor for thehappening of an oncoming Kryptonite asteroid. The two heroes must foil Luthor’s plans by calling upon their super-powered allies.

The style of animation is very similar to that of the comic book, which its always great to see different styles of animation. As a special treat we get the voice acting of Tim Daly as Superman, Kevin Conroy as Batman, Clancy Brown as Lex Luthor. Daly originally voiced the man of steel, but did not reprise the role in the Justice League series. Conroy has voiced Batman from Batman to the Justice League series, even lending his voice to the new video game Arkham Asylum. Brown will reprise his role as Lex Luthor who he played on Superman and Justice League Series.

This will be Bruce Timm’s sixth direct to DVD DC movie in a row, which they seem to be getting better. I thoroughly enjoyed the most recent release Wonder Woman, hopefully the Green Lantern and Superman/Batman movies will be as good if not better. You can purchase Superman/Batman: Public Enemies on September 29, 2009 and Green Lantern: First Flight will be released July 28, 2009.
