Astonishingly Animated!

Marvel has announced that Joss Whedon and John Cassaday’s Astonishing X-Men will be adapted into an animated series.  Marvel has previously released a motion comic based off the first story arc Gifted, but nothing beyond that was released.  Emma Frost and Scott Summers have been the headmasters of the Xavier Institute for some time now, so it will be nice to see an animated representation of how things have been in the X-Men comics for the past 7 years or more.  If they go by the book the core members will consist of Cyclops, Emma Frost, Wolverine, Beast, Kitty Pryde, Colossus, Armor, and maybe Storm.  Hopefully this will fill the void in my heart that was left when Wolverine and the X-Men was cancelled.

SDCC and Beyond!

We were not able to attend the San Diego Comic Con, but we do have some SDCC updates.  First off Batman Beyond will be returning to comics some time in the future, once the current miniseries wraps.

In other DC news Grant Morrison will take on the character Captain Marvel in a title called Thunder World.  Morrison will also be writing for a new Bat-title which will team Batman with many unlikely allies, called Batman INC.  Then Geoff John announced Bightest Day will not be the end to the events of Blackest Night, there will be another story arc after Brightest Day.  Plus we will be seeing a Green Lantern video game and a Suicide Squad video game.

In Marvel news it’s finally official Joss Whedon will be directing the Avengers movie.  Also there will be a new X-title called Generation Hope.  This title will focus on Hope and the five new mutants born at the end of the Second Coming story arc.  This is a break down of what has happened thus far, we will try to keep you updated as always.

Norton No Smash!

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has released a statement confirming that Edward Norton will not be returning as the Hulk,  in The Avengers Movie.

Feige says that “our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead  is rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members”.  (Ouch)  It’s interesting because Norton had met with Joss Whedon and both seemed to be on board with him returning as the Hulk.  Norton was said to be excited about reprising his role until Marvel informed him the role will be recast.  So now the question is who will be the new Hulk.

Dark Horse’d: The coming months!

Recently Dark Horse Comics has been creating some awesome nerdy goodness!   How could it get better than the Buffy Season 8 comic series you ask?

To answer your question, in November a one-shot Dr. Horrible comic book will be released, focusing on how Billy became Dr. Horrible.  It’s written by Zach Whedon and will have special appearances by Captain Hammer, Penny, and Moist [down there], and will have 3 different covers to choose from.

In December, look for a Willow’s one-shot issue of Buffy Season Eight in which Willow meets a serpent lady who seems to know more about what Willow is and what she will become.

Coming this spring Felicia Day will grace us with her presence in The Guild comic book.  This will be a 3 issue mini-series, and we will get to see parts of The Guild we don’t get to see online.  We will actually get to see what the game looks like that the Guildies play! HOORAY!  For a sneak peek check out www.myspace.com/darkhorsepresents.

If you’re as big of a Joss Whedon and Felicia Day fan as I am, then you will definitely want to check these comics out!

Dolly, Pardon?

Dollhouse
(I wouldn’t say no.)

I think it’s about time I weighed in on the Whedonverse’s latest addition, Dollhouse.

Okay, TV world, I get it. You are outraged. Nay, incensed that Dollhouse isn’t Buffy! Nor is it Angel, Firefly, Dr. Horrible or an uncredited Speed screenplay.

But could we give the production team of this show a little bit of slack? It’s a completely new show. Sure, there are many Buffy alums working with this story. There are definitely aspects of this show lacking so far, don’t get me wrong. I may be a fan of just about every Joss Whedon-related endeavor but that doesn’t make me an unthinking fanatic. I’m a fan because I enjoy what I’ve seen. I analyze what I’m watching and process if it’s something I can enjoy or not.

So I didn’t instantly orgasm when I heard Joss & Co. were putting out a new show. I also didn’t immediately hate it simply because it isn’t Buffy season 9 or Firefly: The Musical!

This, like any artistic production, deserves to be judged on its own merits.

I feel that it stands very well on its own two legs, in fact. It’s grown, for Tara’s sake! The premise places the show firmly in the scifi category. Yet we’re not quite in the realm of space travel or time warps. It’s a subtle fantasy lost on those expecting a rip-roaring space odyssey or journey into hell. We are only 6 episodes into the 13 episode season and the show is being shot down by critics before it can even get out of the expository episodes.

Not only is the writing and cohesion of the show improving with every episode, we finally get to see Eliza Dushku (really, too easy) NOT be Faith. Who would have thought we’d ever see the day? She’s becoming a damn fine actress, even if she’s thin as sin in the show.

So really, this is my plea. Give the show a full season before you shove it to the side. This could be the next great series and is showing some major potential already. Don’t let the past overshadow what could be.

Mal-licious!

It has been TOO LONG down there. No, this isn’t going to be some mini-entry with just a bunch of hot pictures! OK, I’m lying, it TOTALLY IS! Or is it? Well, on to the Whedonverse continuation!

Nathan Fillion is gorge! (gorgeous). He’s smart, funny (on screen) and is not scared of a little musical. He’s probably one of the most versatile actors that does not get enough credit. He’s done it all not me though…frown: One Life to Live, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Desperate Housewives… geez, just a PLETHORA of movies and TV shows! Remember Two Guys, a Girl & A Pizza Place? Yea, that was him. One gay movie, OUTING RILEY, which I have not seen yet. He doesn’t play gay but he plays the brother of a gay guy…so that’s nice. (whiink)

Then, of course, my favorite character, Mal from Firefly & Serenity drool. We are all upset that it ended but I’m sure we all own the DVD set, and if you don’t, go get it as it’s a nice addition to anyone’s sci-fi library. If he turned you off as Caleb from Buffy (only because he was massively evil, THE ONLY ACCEPTABLE REASON), I have no doubt that he’ll turn you on in Firefly. Even you straight guys and lezzie maguires!

For shiz (dear old Shiz), he makes me want to get big shiny guns and shoot things in my brown coat. Look for him doing some voiceover work in the new Wonder Woman animation coming out in 2009!
