Weekly Anticipation: Diana: Warrior Princess

(Cover by Cliff Chiang, DC Comics)

Wonder Woman 4 is pure, Greek insanity and it is such a great read! Diana has had enough of the parental lies and sets out to find herself once more just as Hera arrives on Paradise Island to beat up some Amazons. Even if I’m not all about the changes to her birth circumstances, I see the wisdom in creating that extra layer of drama. Especially so when that drama is used so masterfully! Top of the heap forever.

(Cover by Mahmud Asrar, DC Comics)

Supergirl 4 has our Woman of Steel trapped on board a space station in the clutches of her very own Lex Luthor, fighting for survival and for all these damn earth creatures to leave her alone! Mahmud Asrar is on fire in the art department and Michael Green & Mike Johnson are crafting a Kara that I can instantly and permanently relate to. Another book with a strong woman not to be missed!

(Cover by Kaare Andrews, Marvel Comics)

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man 5 returns the ever-fabulous (Ultimate) Spider-Woman to the limelight and I am a ball of ecstasy over the news! Jessica Drew in the Ultimate universe is a clone of Peter Parker and has almost a copy of his personality as well. We had some pretty great flirting between her and Bobby Drake in the past as well as a few heroic moments of her own but having her talk to young Miles as he tries to make sense of his powers, his life and his responsibilities is just the perfect move for Brian Michael Bendis to pull from his idea cap. “Sara Pichelli on art” makes any worries about price point disappear; buy this comic!

DC and Lego Soaring into 2012!

Check out these images of some of the upcoming DC Universe Legos for 2012.  I’m excited to see Superman and Wonder Woman featured in one of the sets, hopefully we will see more characters introduced into Lego form.  This will definitely get us geared up for the video game Lego Batman 2 and maybe even another Lego super hero game.

Weekly Anticipation: Guuuuuuuuurl!

(Cover by Mahmud Asar, DC Comics)

Supergirl 3; mmmmmmmmm, okay! You guys, if this comic were a song and we were all in a totally bangin’ club right now, I would be running onto the dance floor with my hands in the air, exactly as if I did not care! Kara will not take any guff and she’s finally on the hunt for the ship that brought her to earth (and hopefully more answers). If you like things that are interesting, you will like this comic.

(Cover by Cliff Chiang, DC Comics)

Wonder Woman 3 is sure to give us more of the delectable Greek drama with all of the action and subtle homoeroticism I’ve enjoyed in the first two issues! While I don’t personally like the twist that we’re going to learn about Diana’s birth, I trust Brian Azzarello to deliver it in a way that serves the story and brings about a more complex cast of characters. The Diana I loved does not prefer the staff, you guys, if you know what I mean.

(Cover by Charlie Adlard & Cliff Rathburn, Image Comics)

The Walking Dead 91 gives us an Andrea/Dale cover and my heart is broken into a million little pieces right now! Some serious drama bombs are dropping all over the sometimes-safe encampment our intrepid group has been living in for a while now. After the recent loss of so many and the hope of a brighter tomorrow…of course mutiny and failure are stirring underneath it all. Is a zombie utopia too much to ask? Great series that has never let me down, so very worth the cost eternally!

Weekly Anticipation: Haus of Kara

(Cover by Mahmud Asar, DC Comics)

Supergirl 2 actually wins out for me as my most anticipated title this week because I just could not wait to see what happened next after issue 1. Mahmud Asar and Dan Green have such a clean and idyllic art style, it feels vaguely like Francis Manapul to me while still being unique. The Michael Green & Mike Johnson script had me riveted with the chaotic and mysterious appearance of our leading lady and the confusion she feels in this strange, new world. Basically, I can’t wait and this could very well end up being one of my favorite books to come out of the DCnU.

(Cover by Greg Capullo, DC Comics)

Batman 2 is something that Scott Snyder has written and, therefore, will be a great read! Mindless fan-ing aside, the first issue was an excellent Batman story for new or old fans alike. Greg Capullo adds a necessary (but necessarily restrained) darkness to this tale about a villain older than Batman’s familiarity with Gotham and the combination of script and art on this couldn’t be more appropriate. This is just good comics and should be on any superhero-reader’s pull list.

(Cover by Alex Garner, DC Comics)

Green Lantern Corps 2 continues this fabulous (if slight) retooling of the GLC book, starring Guy Gardner and John Stewart. Peter J. Tomasi provided the most efficient and endearing introductions to both characters in the first issue post-reboot (which I highly recommend!) and this will hopefully keep that gravy train rolling. The earth Lanterns are leading the Green Corps against ~an evil from the depths of spaaaace~ once more (for the first time) and this couldn’t be a better time to get into the Green Lantern mythos! Give it a read.

Build Your Way Into 2012 With DC and Marvel!

It was Recently announced at the 2011 SDCC that both DC and Marvel are going to release Lego sets based on their extremely popular characters.  Here is a look at Thor, Hulk and Captain America  from the Marvel side .  Then from the DC side we have Batman, Joker, and the Green Lantern.

Image from Toyark.com

These are pretty cool but I’m still hoping to see the classic Lego mini figures where you build vehicles or buildings.  Come on am I the only one that wants to build Superman’s Fortress of Solitude “wink”, Wonder Woman’s Invisible Jet, or even the legendary Asgard from Thor.

Weekly Anticipation: The Tortoise on Crusade

(Cover by Jim Cheung, Marvel Comics)

Children’s Crusade 7 is here and will it be perfect or too perfect? What’s more to say than that? This will be a fun, beautiful comic; no other outcome is possible. I am mighty curious to see how this fits into the Marvel continuity though, once it all shakes out. Must-buy for everyone!

(Art by Cliff Chiang, DC Comics)

Wonder Woman 1 kicks off the bizarre but promising pairing of Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang on a horror-themed Wondy book!(???) If the promise of a powerful, compassionate warrior goddess kicking ass and taking names isn’t enough to get you into this then PLEASE check out the preview art and get in line to buy it at your local shop! (Oh and the official cover has her in the bathing suit outfit but I prefer the pants in this one image.)

(Cover by Mike Choi, Marvel Comics)

Cloak & Dagger 2 continues the practically perfect (in every way except cover art, sorry Mike Choi!) series that pairs Nick Spencer and Emma Rios on a madcap adventure featuring the unnoticed duo of Cloak and Dagger! Danger abounds during the Spider-Island infection and these two are just trying to live through it. I won’t spoil issue 1 now because I need you to rush out (or online) and get it then this one. I’ll wait. Ignore the cover, love the book!

(My other reads this week are Generation Hope 11, Batman 1, Birds of Prey 1, Blue Beetle 1, Captain Atom 1, Catwoman 1, DCU Presents 1, Green Lantern Corps 1, Nightwing 1, Red Hood and the Outlaws 1, Supergirl 1, Ultimate Comics Hawkeye 2, Ultimate Comics X-Men 1, X-Factor 225 and X-Men: Schism 4)

Weekly Anticipation: Wonder Canny Ultimates

(Cover by Kaare Andrews, Marvel Comics)

Ultimate Comics Ultimates 1 – and the rest of the new Ultimate Comics titles – are all covered by my arch-art-nemesis…but that doesn’t change my jubilant, crazy-fan elation this week in the slightest! Jonathan Hickman writes with a goal in mind and always with character first and Esad Ribic’s preview art is stunning. This looks like a strong start to a new Ultimate Universe, be sure to pick it up on Wednesday!

(Cover by Joshua Middleton, DC Comics)

Wonder Woman 614 concludes what has slowly and surely become a favorite title of mine. A simple but fitting metaphor to end it all (until next month); Diana literally battling the worst parts of herself in order to define and discover who she really is. Phil Hester, thanks for introducing me to how cool Wonder Woman can be. JMS, even though I give you nothing but flak, thanks to you too for coming up with a pretty neat idea…for Phil to finish, sorry! Really though, thanks for making this happen, DC, I’m now a true fan of Diana thanks to this mini-reboot of hers.

(Cover by Esad Ribic, Marvel Comics)

Uncanny X-Force 13 makes the list simply for its enduring quality in art and scribing! The Age of Apocalypse may be giving up a few of its weary inhabitants to the main 616 before long (Nightcrawler for sure and possibly Jean?) so this is one to watch for fans of just this series and the larger Marvel Mutant continuity as well. Darkness! Blood! ~ANGST~! But done so well, it accomplishes these overdone tropes perfectly with honest and engaging character development on top of it.

(American Vampire 18, Gates of Gotham 5, Batman Incorporated 8, Brightest Day Aftermath: The Search for Swamp Thing 3, Kid Flash Lost 3, Lois Lane & The Resistance 3, Project: Superman 3, Green Arrow 15, Emerald Warriors 13 and Justice Society of America 54, Xombi 6)

Weekly Anticipation: Wonder Xschism

(Cover by Joshua Middleton, DC Comics)

Wonder Woman 613 is my most anticipated pick of the week because Phil Hester is finally bringing us the two-part conclusion to The Odyssey! Diana vs. The Morrigan in a show-stopping finale…that won’t matter in two months! The thing about that though is that I’ve found this to be a legitimately captivating story arc to me. Phil Hester’s words (on top of JMS’ plot) made me care about Wonder Woman; where she’s been and where she’s going. It’s going to be one long metaphor with a strong sprinkling of ass-kicking. I am all kinds of signed up!

(Cover by Frank Cho, Marvel Comics)

X-Men Schism 2 makes the list since I loved the first issue! The only slight concern I have is that it almost felt too much like a “aww yeah, X-Men!” beginning, in that I don’t see the conflict coming to a head between Wolverine & Cyclops thus far. That’s a very minor quibble and doesn’t affect my desire to find out how this terrorist/Sentinel-response situation plays out for the beleaguered Utopians just that for an event about a rift between the mutants, we’re getting the more usual Homo sapiens vs. homo superior plot points. All masterfully done by the creative team, of course, just that my interest is genuinely piqued about how we get from point A to point Schism.

(Cover by Frazer Irving, DC Comics)

Xombi 5 is the penultimate issue of this magnificent but short-lived reboot. The team is on board the Ninth Stronghold and it’s up to David Kim to steal back the city-ship and save the day. Seriously, with only 4 other issues to pick up to be caught up, definitely seek them out! It’s strange, it’s funny it’s haunting and beautiful. This is art on top of art and well worth the time and money.

(American Vampire 17, Search for Swamp Thing 2, DC Retroactive: JLA The 70s, Kid Flash Lost 2, Lois Lane and the Resistance 2, Project Superman 2, Green Arrow 14, Green Lantern Corps 62, Emerald Warriors 12, JSA 53, Teen Titans 98, Ultimate Comics Fallout 3, Uncanny X-Force 12)

DC and Lego Building Together!

Variety has announced that Warner Bros. and Lego have teamed up once again, to release a line of “Super Hero” play-sets and figures.  Lego will have access to all of DC Entertainment’s catalog of characters and stories.  The first Super Hero Lego’s will be shown off at the 2011 San Diego Comic Con, where 3,000 Batman and Green Lantern mini figures will be given away.

Image from Lego Batman

In January 2012 Lego will release 13 figures which include Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Lex Luthor, Haley Quinn and Bane.  Then later in the summer more merchandise will be released centering around the move  The Dark Knight Rises.

I obviously want to  see my favorite DC characters in Lego form, but I’m hoping that this will lead to a Lego Justice League game.

Weekly Anticipation: Green Hope Gates

(Cover by Dave Johnson, DC Comics)

War of the Green Lanterns Aftermath 1 is my first title this week because of all the exciting comics out this week (barring a Flashpoint tie-in or two, I’d want all of these in position 1) I simply can’t wait to see how Tony Bedard deals with the humongous logistical and emotional damage done to the Green Lantern Corps. So much death coupled with so much loss and a few new mysteries thrown in are sure to make this one hell of a rollercoaster.

(Cover by Salvador Espin, Marvel Comics)

Generation Hope 9 could very well be the point that I stop reading Generation Hope and Kieron Gillen’s work altogether or the one that cements him in my hall of fame. I’m being so dramatic because Messer Gillen has wonderfully chosen to cover an important and relevant issue in this his new and quirky X-series. Gay bullying and suicide are on the docket and require an immensely talented scripting and art team to handle properly. I have high hopes but things could go south very quickly, even in a fairly liberal atmosphere like Marvel. Hope finds a new Light and deals with his tribulations while attempting to set him on the right path. You have my full attention and my highest hopes, Kieron Gillen, I can’t wait to read it!

(Cover by Trevor McCarthy, DC Comics)

Gates of Gotham 3 is confidently placed here because Scott Snyder and Kyle Higgins have displayed a deft hand at crafting compelling superheroic mysteries! The Batfamily is under attack but never backing down from a fight! Dick and Tim are facing off against The Architect as he seeks to destroy the first families of Gotham! New puzzles surface as answers about the city and its history come to light. I foresee another great time with the Batclan ahead!

(Avengers Academy 16, DC Retroactive: Batman – The 70s, DC Retroactive: Wonder Woman – The 70s, Deadman and The Flying Graysons 2, The Outsider 2, Wonder Woman and The Furies 2, JLA 59, T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents 9, Ultimate Comics Fallout 2, Walking Dead 87, X-Factor 222, Zatanna 15 are the rest of my titles this week)
