Frankenstein and the Creatures of the Unknown 1 is the spiritual successor to Grant Morrison’s mind-blowing, gorgeous Seven Soldiers of Victory and it’s written by Jeff Lemire, so I am all over this again and again. Frankenstein is woken up in the Flashpoint world early in the war days of America (making organizations like the JSA unnecessary) and this tells the tale of his time commanding this version of the Creature Commandos. It’s a terrible world full of secrets and darkness and who better to get to the bottom of things then the unstoppable monster? I would be floored if this didn’t end up being my pick of the week. If you’re reading any Flashpoint, TRY THIS ONE!
American Vampire: Survival of the Fittest 1 is the universe-expanding miniseries from Scott Snyder & Sean Murphy that you just have to read if you’ve read and enjoyed American Vampire before. And if you’ve read it, you’ve enjoyed it! The Vassals of the Morningstar star in this WWII mystery as they enter Romania searching for a rumored vampire cure. Nazis, vampires and monster hunters y’all. Scott Snyder is quickly joining the like of Gail Simone and Mike Grell in my mind, meaning that if he’s involved, I’m involved.
Birds of Prey 13 has the Birds trapped in a nightmare labyrinth engineered by Junior and only Huntress and the Question can get the team out alive! This is a return to form for the book and I can’t wait to see Gail Simone really cut loose here now that Brightest Day is over! Superspy ladies kicking ass is always the right narrative choice.
(Booster Gold 45, Citizen Cold 1, Deathstroke: The Curse of the Ravager 1, Emperor Aquaman 1, Ultimate Comics Spider-Man 159, X-Men Legacy 250)

Green Arrow 12 is (of course) my most anticipated title of the week! And not just because I always love to read about my favorite character but because this is going to be JT Krul’s first legitimately self-inspired take on the title. Well, mostly, he has to deal with the aftermath of Brightest Day (Galahad, the Demon and the Star City Forest) but where we head now in the series is largely up to him and his editor, not the Brightest Day event team. Here’s to an inspired future for the Emerald Archer, long live the Queen!
American Vampire 15 is sure to be another excellent entry in the WWII-era arc of this always top-notch series. We get more of the creepy new vamps attacking Henry’s troop, Skinner being a grade-A ass and Pearl determined to help her human mans out. It can never be said enough that if you even kind of enjoy the stories people can tell with vampires, you will love this series. It’s a fresh take on the well-worn vampiric mythos and I can’t recall a dull issue from the outset. Rafael Albuquerque and Scott Snyder OTP!
JSA 51 is the Marc Guggenheim issue I’ve been waiting for since he took over the title. Not that I haven’t been feeling the Monument Point storyline more and more as the arc progresses but this little side adventure into the mystical realms with Doctor Fate and Lightning is the kind of comic I’m all about! I dug much of the old Doctor Fate series and he has always been my favorite JSA character. The mixture of the human and the arcane always flips mah switches and with Lightning’s very soul on the line, things are sure to be tense!
(My remaining pull list this week is: Green Lantern 66, Green Lantern Corps 60, Emerald Warriors 10, Venom 3, Uncanny X-Men 537, The Walking Dead 85, X-Men Legacy 249 & Xombi 3)

There are a lot of hardcore Phoenix fans out there who want that bitch back. And there are a lot of Phoenix fans out there who are content with her being deadsville whilest Scott and Emma continue their boinkfest. To that I say thee NAY! I am ready for a good old fashion Jean Grey rise from the ashes return. Or at the very least the solid return of Marvel Girl [Rachel], Polaris, and Havok. They sure have been in space a long time. I think I’m cleared to assume Havok is being a space slut at this point. Check the preview image from Marvel.com for X Men Legacy #250. The last panel looks like Rogue is all “I’ve had better”.
Birds of Prey 12 is easily the top title I’m excited for this week and it’s only partially because of this totally rad cover! Oracle and the Birds are all, “Oh! Did we blow up that building? Well, hooooowdee!” that’s a very fitting introduction to Jesus Saiz, the new ongoing series artist and a fitting start to what feels like the Birds really finding their own after Brightest Day. I can’t wait!
Flashpoint 1 kicks off the summer’s huge DC event (not like we always need one, Big Two, but I love you anyways) with Geoff Johns ode to Flash and Cyborg! It’s the same world with important points in the timeline messed up. I’ve read some promising interviews with some of the tie-in creators that seem to truly grasp the opportunity something like this provides. Fingers crossed that we’ll be seeing plenty of great character studies that are fresh and new but still cast a mirrored image of the heroes we know and love. I’m unironically stoked like a furnace and I hope it can live up to the hype.
X-Men Legacy 248 is tied for third with New Mutants on my list this week but pulls ahead slightly since it officially starts this Year of the X-Men we’ve been so coyly teased about! Longtime X-Men fans, is Legacy’s hair a mutant power? Because damn, that is a mountain of mane. We’re getting the fallout of the Age of X here focusing specifically on Rogue and Magneto, two characters I’ve enjoyed in one medium or another and their sometimes-antagonism is bubbling to the surface as they try to deal with their newly acquired baggage. Sounds like an angst-ridden joyride to me!
(New Mutants 25, The Flash 12, X-Men 11 & Batman, Inc. 6 round out my pull list for the week. What are you reading?)

Birds of Prey 11 is all about Huntress’ and Catman’s first (and last, obviously) foray into the dating world. I mean, these two are going to cause explosions, there’s just no other way it would play out. I can’t wait to read this one!
The Flash 10 begins our wind down of this series and the prelude to Flashpoint! Hot Pursuit is Barry Allen (from another mother) and he comes with a dire warning for this timeline’s Flash. It’s a big question mark done by Francis Manapul so it’s already a surely beautiful read.
Generation Lost 23 is the second-to-last issue of this consistently gratifying series and it would be a crying shame if we didn’t see the JLI in one form or another after this! Wonder Woman is back in New York (uh…way to spoil your own series there, DC?), the OMACs are attacking once again and it’s up to the team to bring the final fight to Max Lord!
Superboy 6 pits the Boy of Steel vs. the orbiting Kryptonian death satellite (see the previous chapter of Reign of Doomsday) and I still have no clue why this story thread is happening. Love this book though and Doomsday could bring some new tension to the Superboy series!
T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents 6 ends Nick Spencer’s first arc of this excellent new thriller but I’ve heard rumors they’ll be reevaluating the creative future of the book now that he’s gone Marvel exclusive? In any case, this final battle between T.H.U.N.D.E.R. and Spider is sure to make for at least one more exceptional bit of entertainment.
In Titans 34 we have the gang on Drago dealing with the de-eyeballing from last issue and Osiris dealing with a newly resurrected Isis…who just might be possessed by Blaze? Craziness, too much violence and juuuuust enough Roy and Shazam-family progression to keep me around, I guess.
Looks like the Whedon/Cassaday run from Astonishing is being re-visited again in Uncanny X-Men 535! The Breakworld wasn’t exactly left a magical, tidy Disneyworld by the X-Men and now that the Breaks (Breakers? Breakites?) have re-built…they’re coming after Colossus! Kitty Pryde also gets a mention in the solicit this week so I’m pretty excited to see how this four-parter works out!
X-Men Legacy 247 is chapter 5 of Age of X and cuss just got real! Xavier’s awake and the fortress is tearing itself apart with mistrust and infighting. My interest is still entirely there to see how this mystery plays out and just what it means to the regular 616.

Birds of Prey 10 is the conclusion to The Death of Oracle! A huge cast is promised but is Barbara Gordon really and truly gone? A must-read!
I,Zombie 11 puts Gwen face-to-face with her childhood, Ellie acquainting herself with Spot’s grandfather, Galatea and Amon gettin’ frisky and the monster hunters and monster hunted making nice.
JSA All-Stars 16 concludes The Puzzle Men arc and this title is headed to the cancellation stack in just two more issues. Plenty of fun to be had in the mean time, Arthur Pemberton is basically a jerk with a heart of gold?
Generation Lost 21 could very well prove that Jaime has died but in either case, Booster is heartbroken once again as Max Lord frantically searches for the Wonder Woman the world forgot. Insanity but still gold!
The Outsiders 37 is part two of The Reign of Doomsday and The Eradicator is next on the Big Bad’s checklist! I’m curious where this takes me but I enjoyed Steel enough to check this issue out as well.
Superboy 5 is the first ever Kid Flash/Superboy race! Man, you would have thought we’d have seen that by now, right? Anyways, the race is on and the shadowy menace facing Smallville continues to slooooowly reveal itself in full.
Titans 33 means I am still buying this book? The Isis story has me hooked, sorry, y’all! Cheshire and Roy betray Slade on an island where Drago is holding gladiatorial fights. Please, please let the Shazam! family story take off into its own book! It’s really not terrible just not my usual kind of story.
Venom 1…AMERICA FUCK YEAH! Flash Thompson is the new host for Venom and he’s working for the government! My boyfriend and I are pretty interested in the concept but are only really familiar with the Ultimate universe version. All signs point to a good comic!
Wonder Woman 608 brings the aftermath of the slaughter of the Amazons at the safe-house to Diana and Cheetah and Silver Swan are hellbent on driving her mad and out into the world. I hope the Morrigan’s plan doesn’t succeed but there’s no faster way to make a princess go Dark-Willow than to decimate her people. Phil Hester is making this happen in a real way, everyone.
X-Men Legacy 246 sets Legacy-Reaper-Rogue on the lam from her fellow mutants while this reality’s evil Avengers come to hunt her down! Plenty of nitty-gritty fun three (counting Alpha) in and I’m expecting more of the same!
Did you know Paul Dini married Zatanna? Because he basically did. Which I totally approve of, those two are adorable together! Anyways, Zatanna 10 continues Pupaphobia with the once-murderous puppet being granted access to Shadowcrest! Will Zee manage to undo her father’s spell and set things right? Is it right at all? We’ll see but this is still a solid series that makes it happen every issue!
