The Young Protectors

I’m going to start this post off by saying, I wish I had read this comic when I was 17. The Young Protectors, written and created by Alex Woolfson with art by Adam DeKraker and colors by Vernoica Gandini, gives the appeal and drama one would hope for in a comic that feels like an awesome 2012 run of New Mutants with a touch of yaoi! Just a touch. That being said this comic is somewhat NSFW, and would note that it is also for mature readers…oh and it’s pretty gay too, but in the best sense of the word.

The Young Protectors focuses on 17 year old Kyle. A teen superhero; a flame wielding ginger with a secret. [I promise minimal pun-age going forward] He’s gay and dealing with keeping that secret from his mostly straight team and the world at large, but like a moth to a flame [apologies], lands himself in front of the most dangerous supervillian in the world, The Annihilator, while on his first secret outing to the local gay bar. It’s gay blackmail at it’s best when The Annihilator’s demands to keep Kyle’s secret in a very “part of your world” moment lead to sprawling branches of action and drama. And this is just the first few pages.

The Young Protectors is filled with well rounded, diverse and interesting characters with a fluid storyline that makes you want to read all of the chapters in one sitting. It’s funny and awkward, silly and sexy, fighty and bitey, and as Tina would point out, “there are butts”.
